SUPPORTING TECHNOLOGY

RF environmental modeling & evaluation.

A modeling foundation for studying how propagation and sensor errors influence cooperative emitter localization.

WHY MODEL THE ENVIRONMENT?

Test the sensing assumptions.

A localization algorithm depends on the measurements it receives. Environmental modeling provides a controlled way to vary those measurements and examine where a method works well or needs further development.

MODELING SCOPE

Connect channel effects to localization behavior.

Propagation & multipath

Urban channel studies examine direct and reflected signal paths, including models informed by ITU-R P.1411.

Fading & weather

Published simulations incorporate fading and atmospheric effects to explore performance across modeled conditions.

Timing & position error

Sensor error studies examine the measurement uncertainties that contribute to the geolocation error budget.

VALIDATION APPROACH

Cross-environment evaluation.

The research progression includes statistical simulation and evaluation of the localization controller in an EXata digital twin. This provides a higher-fidelity comparison for the sensing loop and helps expose sensitivity to environmental assumptions.

The public evidence supports the specific comparisons in the linked papers. Agreement between simulations is one part of validation; measured RF data and flight experiments remain important next steps.

ROLE IN THE FLAGSHIP

A supporting capability with its own research value.

Environmental modeling supports scenario design, sensitivity analysis, and comparison of candidate localization and sensor-tasking approaches. It is a core supporting technology for the DQN localization system and a focus for future collaborative research.
